Steering Repair
Steering faults are an MOT failure and a safety risk. We find the worn joint or failing assistance and set the alignment correctly afterwards.
Why book with us
Steering Repair with clear advice.
Most steering problems come down to one of three things: a worn joint such as a track rod end, a leaking or failing power steering rack, or an electric power steering fault. We check each with the wheels off the ground and on the road, so we know which before quoting.
Any job that disturbs the steering geometry, like a new track rod end or rack, changes the tracking. We always check and set the wheel alignment afterwards so the car drives straight and the tyres wear evenly.
Joints and racks checked
Track rod ends, inner joints, rack mounts and gaiters inspected for play.
Hydraulic and electric
Power steering pumps, fluid leaks and electric steering faults diagnosed.
Aligned afterwards
Tracking set after steering work so the car runs straight.

Common questions
- Why has my steering suddenly gone heavy?
- On cars with hydraulic power steering it is often low fluid from a leak or a failing pump. On electric power steering, used by most cars since about 2010 including the Ford Focus and Vauxhall Corsa, it is usually a fault in the motor, sensor or wiring. We read the fault codes and test the system to find out which.
- What causes a knocking noise when I turn the wheel?
- A knock on full lock is often a worn CV joint, while a clunk over bumps when steering can be a track rod end, drop link or rack mount. We lift the car and check every joint for play rather than guessing.
- Will a steering fault fail the MOT?
- Yes. Excessive play in steering joints, damaged gaiters and power steering leaks are all MOT failure items. If you have an advisory for steering, book it in before your next test and we will tell you what needs doing now.
