Suspension Springs & Shocks: How Long Do They Last?

How long do suspension springs and shocks last
Coil springs typically last the life of the vehicle if not abused. Shock absorbers (dampers) usually need replacement every 40,000 to 80,000 miles or 4 to 8 years. Worn shocks feel bouncy or soft — the car dips and recovers slowly over bumps.
Signs of suspension wear
Common warning signs include a bouncy or drifting ride, knocking sounds over bumps, uneven tyre wear (a sign shocks are not controlling the wheels properly), and difficulty stopping (worn shocks affect brake performance).
On our ramps, we inspect for broken springs, leaking shocks, worn bushes, and ball joint play. A full suspension inspection takes about an hour.
Broken springs and emergency repairs
A broken spring is dangerous and needs immediate attention. You may notice one corner of the car sitting lower than the other, or a loud clang from underneath.
If this happens, drive slowly and carefully to us, or call us for advice — do not ignore it. A broken spring throws extra weight onto the other three wheels and ruins handling.
Replacement and alignment
When we replace shocks and springs, we always recommend a wheel alignment check afterward. New suspension components can change tracking slightly, and poor alignment causes tyre wear and handling issues.
