Old Hill is about two miles east of our workshop, just over the boundary into Sandwell. The most direct way to us is along Reddal Hill Road into Cradley Heath, then on through Quarry Bank to Mount Pleasant. Outside the rush hour it is usually around ten minutes.
The centre of Old Hill is the junction at Old Hill Cross on the Halesowen Road, with the railway station nearby and Haden Hill House and its park just up the road. Around them are rows of terraced streets and newer estates climbing up towards Rowley Regis. It is a busy, close-knit part of the Black Country, and most people get about by car.
As the name suggests, Old Hill is not flat. Waterfall Lane and the roads up to Haden Hill are steep, and in winter they are among the first to ice over. Brakes, tyres, clutches and handbrakes all earn their keep here, and a car with worn tyres or weak brakes will soon show it. We check those first on every Old Hill car that comes in.
Old Hill also has plenty of drivers who use the train from Old Hill station into Birmingham and keep a car for local trips. Cars like that can go months between long runs, which can lead to flat batteries and rusty brake discs. A service at the right interval stops small problems turning into bigger ones.
