Grinding Noise When Braking? It Is Not Always the Pads

28 June 2026 · 4 min read

Metal on metal: worn brake pads

If your brakes grind every time you brake, your brake pads are worn through to the metal backing plate. This is dangerous — you have very little friction left, and you are damaging the brake disc at the same time.

Do not ignore this. Worn brakes reduce your stopping power and increase stopping distance. Call us on 01384 936310 and we will fit new pads and inspect the discs the same week.

Intermittent grinding: stones or seized parts

A stone wedged between the pad and disc can cause grinding only on some brakes. This is less serious but annoying and suggests brake maintenance is needed soon.

A seized calliper or brake spring can also cause grinding if part of the brake system is sticking. We inspect and clean these areas during a brake service.

Rough discs and uneven pads

Uneven brake wear or rough, scored discs can cause a grinding or grinding-like noise. We measure pad thickness and disc condition during every service and brake inspection.
