Signs Your Clutch Is Going (and How Long It Has Left)

10 February 2026 · 5 min read

Slipping under load

The classic sign is the revs rising without the car speeding up to match, especially when pulling away uphill or accelerating hard in a high gear. That means the friction plate is worn and can no longer grip the flywheel properly.

A slipping clutch only gets worse, and if it is left the car can eventually refuse to drive at all.

Biting point, noises and smells

A biting point that has crept right up to the top of the pedal travel usually means the plate is wearing thin. A burning smell after a hill start, a judder as you pull away, or a rumble that changes when you press the pedal are other common signs.

A heavy or spongy pedal can point to the hydraulic side instead — a leaking master or slave cylinder — which is often a smaller job than a full clutch.

Dual-mass flywheels

Many diesel and larger petrol cars use a dual-mass flywheel, which wears alongside the clutch. If it rattles at idle or knocks when you switch off, it often makes sense to replace it with the clutch, because the labour to reach it is the same.
