How Often Should Brake Fluid Be Changed?

10 March 2026 · 4 min read

Why brake fluid wears out

Brake fluid is hygroscopic, which means it slowly absorbs moisture from the air. Water lowers the fluid's boiling point, and under hard or repeated braking the fluid can boil, leaving a soft pedal just when you need it most.

Moisture also corrodes brake parts from the inside, including the ABS unit, which is an expensive part to replace.

How often it needs changing

Most manufacturers recommend a brake fluid change every two years, regardless of mileage. Some specify a different interval, so we always follow your car's schedule.

We test the fluid's water content during services, so you will know if yours is due early.

Signs to watch for

A spongy or long brake pedal, a brake warning light, or the fluid level in the reservoir dropping are all reasons to get the brakes checked straight away. A dropping level can mean a leak or very worn pads.
