EGR Valve Problems: Symptoms of a Sticking Valve
27 January 2026 · 4 min read
What the EGR valve does
The exhaust gas recirculation valve feeds a small amount of exhaust gas back into the engine to lower combustion temperatures and cut emissions. Over time, soot and oil vapour build up a hard carbon crust that stops the valve opening and closing properly.
Diesel engines are most affected, especially cars that do lots of short trips, but petrol engines have EGR valves too.
Common symptoms
A sticking EGR valve can cause a rough or hunting idle, flat spots and poor acceleration, more black smoke than usual, worse fuel economy, and an engine management light. Some cars drop into limp mode to protect the engine.
Because the symptoms overlap with other faults such as a boost leak or a failing sensor, it is worth having it diagnosed properly rather than guessing.
Clean or replace?
If the valve is only coked up and the motor and position sensor still work, a clean can bring it back to life. If the electrical side has failed or the valve is badly worn, replacement is the reliable fix. On some engines the EGR cooler also needs attention.
