Car Air Con Not Blowing Cold? The Usual Causes

16 June 2026 · 4 min read

Low refrigerant

Car air conditioning slowly loses refrigerant over the years, even with no obvious leak. Once the level gets low, the system blows cool rather than cold, then eventually just warm. A regas every couple of years keeps most systems working well.

If the system empties quickly after a regas, there is a leak — often a condenser damaged by stones behind the front grille, or a perished seal.

Compressor and electrical faults

The compressor is the pump that drives the system. If its clutch does not engage, a fuse or relay has failed, or a pressure sensor is faulty, the system will not cool even with the right amount of gas in it.

A blocked cabin filter or a failing blower motor can also mean weak airflow, which feels like poor cooling.

Smells from the vents

A musty smell when you switch the air con on usually means bacteria growing on the evaporator. An antibacterial treatment and a new cabin filter normally sort it.
