Birmingham Clean Air Zone: Is My Car Affected?
26 May 2026 · 5 min read
What the Clean Air Zone is
Birmingham's Clean Air Zone covers the city centre inside the A4540 Middleway ring road (the ring road itself is not included). It is a charging zone, so vehicles that do not meet the emissions standards pay a daily charge to drive in it. It applies to cars as well as vans, taxis, buses, coaches and lorries.
Brierley Hill and the rest of Dudley borough are outside the zone, so the charge only matters if you drive into central Birmingham.
Which cars are charged
As a general guide, petrol cars need to meet Euro 4 and diesel cars Euro 6. That usually means most petrol cars from around 2006 onwards and most diesel cars from around 2015 onwards are compliant — but the date alone is not proof, as some models met the standard earlier or later.
The reliable way to check is the official government vehicle checker for Clean Air Zones: enter your registration and it tells you whether your car is charged in Birmingham. Charges, exemptions and rules can change, so check there before you drive in rather than relying on a guide.
Keeping a compliant car clean
Whether a car is charged depends on its Euro standard, not on how well it is running, so no repair can change a non-compliant car's status. What servicing does is keep a compliant car running as cleanly as it was built to — and passing the emissions part of its MOT.
On modern diesels that means a healthy DPF and EGR system, the correct low-ash engine oil, and fixing warning lights promptly rather than letting faults build up.
